Patent Attorney — Unique In-house Opportunity

Harness, Dickey & Pierce, P.L.C., an intellectual property law firm based in Troy, Michigan, has a unique opportunity to place an attorney in-house at a subsidiary of a large Japanese corporation located in Nagoya, Japan, which specializes in international patent practice. Qualified candidates should be licensed to practice in a U.S. state, preferably be registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and have 1 – 3 years patent prosecution experience. Preference will be given to electrical and mechanical engineering candidates and/or candidates having some automotive engineering experience. Harness Dickey will provide 1-3 months training at its office in Troy, Michigan, after which time the candidate will be re-located to Nagoya, Japan. The corporation pays for moving expenses between the U.S. and Japan, and provides assistance with securing an apartment in Nagoya. Harness Dickey will assist in matters pertaining to obtaining the candidate’s work visa.

While in Japan, the candidate will be responsible for preparing, in accordance with U.S. patent practice, English language translations of patent applications originally filed in the Japan Patent Office. An amount of patent drafting, including patent claims, will be necessary to supplement specifications of certain translations as invention improvements become known before filing outside of Japan. Additionally, the candidate will be responsible for coordinating handling, analyzing, and providing internal recommendations for strategy to respond to communications from foreign patent offices (such as Office Actions). The position is part of an established corporate patent department within the corporation.

The candidate’s commitment in Japan will be for a period of two years minimum with the Japanese corporation. Upon successful completion of the assignment in Japan, the candidate may have the opportunity to join Harness Dickey as an attorney upon obtaining the requisite state licensure. No Japanese language skills, nor prior work experience outside the United States, are required for this position. The candidate will have ample opportunity to vacation throughout the Far East, as well as to Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific region. No work-related travel is anticipated.
